Therapeutic Modalities Offered
Based upon assessment of the needs of the client we will discuss the modality that is the appropriate fit. The following is a list of some of the main modalities I work with.
Child Centered Play Therapy: This type of therapy focuses on the child and they get to lead the session. Play therapy helps children to feel empowered, capable and heard. Children can not verbally express what they are experiencing and their troubles and worries will come out through play.
Sandtray Therapy: This modality uses a sandtray and miniatures to help clients construct their "inner world". It is a way to access children and adolescents indirectly and is often less intimidating than simply talking about what is bothering a client. Adults benefit from sand tray as well!
TFCBT: Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is a evidence based modality that helps children and adolescents who have experienced some type of trauma. It is a structured type of therapy and treatment focuses on developing coping skills and telling the story of what happened to them thus empowering clients.
Theraplay (R): I am a trained in Theraplay (R). From The Theraplay (R) website "Theraplay is a child and family therapy for building and enhancing attachment, self-esteem, trust in others, and joyful engagement. It is based on the natural patterns of playful, healthy interaction between parent and child and is personal, physical, and fun. Theraplay interactions focus on four essential qualities found in parent-child relationships: Structure, Engagement, Nurture, and Challenge. Theraplay sessions create an active, emotional connection between the child and parent or caregiver, resulting in a changed view of the self as worthy and lovable and of relationships as positive and rewarding."
Family Therapy: In family therapy, I work with parents and children to find solutions to their relational problems. I am influenced by the work of John T. Edwards, PhD who pioneered many techniques in family therapy.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Dialetical Behavioral Therapy: These modalities are effective for depression, anxiety and self harm behaviors. They help clients to examine their thoughts and how to change their thoughts to more helpful thoughts.
